How does Bowen Therapy Treat Incontinence? Bowen works with the fascia and nervous system and can help to strengthen the signal between the bladder and the rest of the nervous system including the brain. Muscles are controlled by the nerves, and by simply stimulating the nerves to the bladder, including those that control the muscles responsible for the passing of urine, clients find it helps them remain dry. Also, because the nerves around the bladder are more stimulated, clients report a stronger sensation of 'needing to go' which helps in the case of the bladder emptying at random times. Bowen stimulates the 'inner alarm' by creating a stronger sensation of needing to go to the toilet, which is highly effective in most cases. Typically 3 treatments are required, one per week over a 3 week period, and although everyone is different, usually clients report improvement after the first treatment. Bedwetting in Children
How does Bowen help my child to stop wetting the bed? Bowen works with the nervous system and can help to strengthen the signal between the bladder and the rest of the nervous system including the brain. Children report having a stronger sensation of 'needing to go' which helps wake up deep sleepers. Most children who have come to see me have previously tried using bedwetting alarms without success because either their children sleep too deeply and don't wake up from the alarm, or only a small amount of urine has leaked and the alarm hasn't gone off. Bowen instead stimulates the 'inner alarm' by creating a stronger sensation of needing to go to the toilet, which works in most cases. Another way Bowen may help is in the way that it relaxes the muscles. The bladder is also muscular, and when it is relaxed it is able to expand more and hold more urine, therefore reducing the need to go to the toilet. Both of these actions working together helps children to remain dry at night. When will my child stop wetting the bed? Typically children stop, or greatly reduce the frequency they wet the bed after three sessions spread over 3 weeks. Although everybody is different, often there is improvement after the first session. The 2nd and 3rd sessions reinforce the inner communication between the bladder and the brain allowing the treatment to hold and help your child to remain dry long term. Very occationally I have had children return to the clinic in a month or so for a top up treatment, but for the most part children remain dry.
